Fat is important to maintaining a moisture barrier in skin – it prevents internal moisture from evaporating and external moisture from soaking in by building a protective barrier around cells. Fat is also essential for a soft texture and healthy shine. The dog can manufacture most of the fatty acid types it needs, but some must come from the diet.
– Omega-6 and omega-3 must come from food. Other monounsaturated fats like omega-9 are also healthy and all unsaturated fatty acids help maintain cell membranes’ flexibility and suppleness.
– Omega-3 and -6 are also critical to maintaining a balance between inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators in the skin while also boosting the skin’s immune defenses.
– EPA and DHA are the most active derivatives of omega-3 linolenic acid. Meats from animals that were fed a grain-based diet lack in Omega-3s.
– Biotin, vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E/tocopherols also play an important role in skin and coat integrity, immune defenses and cellular health.

It contains quality fish oil for the all-important DHA and EPA fatty acids. The fish oil used comes from fish that stores the fat in the body (not fish liver oil). The fish oil used is Reviact™ Multi Omega is menhaden fish oil, an omega-3 rich fish harvested in the federally regulated waters along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Reviact™ Multi Omega also includes alpha linolenic acid from vegetable fats such as flaxseed. DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) are the most important anti-inflammatory fatty acids. They are also important building blocks for healthy cell membrane structure. The mechanism of action of omega-3 fatty acid is to inhibit the conversion of arachidonic acid (AA). AA is an omega-6 fatty acid producing prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and thromboxanes. These eicosanoids have predominantly vasoactive and proinflammatory effects. Inhibiting the conversion of AA to these eicosanoids is the principal action of most NSAIDs used to treat OA. Eicosanoids produced from EPA and DHA are not potent inflammatory mediators, in contrast to those produced from AA. In a study of dietary supplementation with fish oil omega-3 fatty acids in osteoarthritic dogs showed a significant improvement in weight-bearing (peak vertical force - PVF, improved 82%) as compared with the control group (38%).
Research has shown that dogs with oily, dandruffy skin (seborrhea) have insufficient omega 6 fatty acids in their skin despite eating a diet that should be optimal. When omega 6 fatty acids are supplemented, the seborrhea improves. This finding supports the old-time remedy of adding a spoonful of corn oil to the diet to ensure a glossy coat. Seborrhea is a complex condition but animals with it may need more omega 6 fatty acids. Dogs with dry itchy skin or dull brittle coat will benefit from omega 6 supplementation. Omega 6 is simply the best fatty acid for healthy skin and glossy coat. Dogs with high-energy requirements also benefit from omega 6 supplementation, like pregnant or nursing bitches, growing puppies and dogs involved in energetic sports like agility or flyball.
Omega 9 is non-essential fatty acid, meaning the body can produce it naturally. However, increased level of DHA and EPA fatty acids (through omega 3 supplementation) causes the body to use up its reserves of omega 9. Omega 9 is a fatty acid that the body produces on its own and helps prevent cardiovascular disease. Because omega-9 fatty acids have been shown to increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol and decrease LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, they help eliminate plaque build- up in the arteries, which causes heart attack and stroke. Omega 9 is non-essential fatty acid, meaning the body can produce it naturally. However, increased level of DHA and EPA fatty acids (through omega 3 supplementation) causes the body to use up its reserves of omega 9.
The B Vitamins in general help promoting healthy nerves, mouth, skin, eyes, hair, and liver. As well as help supporting and maintaining healthy skin and hair, Biotin is required for proper function of enzymes in the body. Biotin (also called vitamin B7) is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it is not stored in the body. Biotin is a coenzyme that functions as carrier of carbon dioxide in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and amino acid metabolism. Biotin is necessary for both metabolism and cell growth in these vital biological processes.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble nutrient that is essential for your pet’s body to develop strong and healthy muscles, and healthy circulatory and immune systems. It’s also an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from damage caused
by free radicals. Those fat soluble are Important for healthy skin and coat and offers wide range of health benefits for dogs and helps to prevent vitamin deficiency.
Vitamin E functions as a quenching agent for free radical
molecules with single, highly reactive electrons in its outer shell.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (i.e., stored in the fatty tissues of the body and liver) that is vital in regulating the calcium and phosphorous balance
in your dog's body. It also promotes the retention of calcium, thus aiding bone formation and nerve and muscle control.
Both traditional vitamin E in the form of tocopherol and the tocotrienol form of vitamin E offer similar benefits. They are both antioxidants with the power to reduce inflammation, potentially promoting anti-cancer, anti-aging, and other benefits.
